Kids Reading

Submission guidelines

The focus and mission of knowonder! magazine is to help parents promote, encourage and teach creativity, imagination and literacy in their children.

Our audience is parents of young families, usually ages 25 to 40, with children between the ages of 3 and 10.

The article portion of our magazine is quite small – just 3 articles per issue. The feature article of each issue should always be something about our main goal. Some examples are: importance of reading with your children, benefits of teaching sign language (or any language) at an early age, how to teach kids to draw, how to involve children in storytelling, what sort of activities are good for kids’ brains, etc.

Any research that has been done in the field of children regarding brain development, literacy, creativity, etc., is something we are interested in.

Other articles can include a wide array of topics that parents (most especially moms) are interested in, like: getting kids to eat healthy, easy & healthy recipes, craft and/or creative projects to do with kids, exercise advice, health advice, tips on better parenting, how to discipline children, etc.

Articles:

We want strong, engaging, interesting, fact-based articles. We want personal experiences and stories to help other parents identify with what the article is about.

Article word counts are as follows:

1) 700 – 750 words (if a call-out of 100 to 150 words is included)

2) 1000 words (if no call-out)

3) 1600 - 1700 words

Word counts outside these ranges may be used, but risk a much-higher level of editing, and are less likely to be used.

Stories:

Story submissions should be fiction. We may accept the occasional non-fiction story/article for the story section of the magazine, but this is the exception, not the rule.

Story word counts are as follows:

1) 450-550 words

2) 950-1050 words

3) 1500-1600 words

Word counts outside these ranges may be used, but risk a much-higher level of editing, and are less likely to be used.

Please send all submissions via our website. You will need to create an account on our site before you can upload a story. It is much easier for us to manage the submissions by having them uploaded into our database.

Art Submission Guidelines:

To upload a picture your child has drawn, please scan it into a computer at 300 dpi. After scanned, please change the size of the picture to 2.5" on the longest side. If you don't have photo-editing software, you may scan the picture on 72dpi, and send us the original scanned artwork.

For your child's face, please scan a school picture of your child, again at 300dpi. You may re-size this picture to be 2" on the longest side.

If you don't have a school photo of your child, you may also send us a digital picture of your child. When choosing this option, though, please make sure your child is the main focus of the picture, and not just one person out of many.
